Coronavirus Update

WE ARE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

To all of our customers: Stay healthy, stay safe. This will prove a tough time for all of us. And yet, as one of you said in an e-mail to me recently, ‘we might need a bit of colour during these difficulties.’ With that in mind, here are my initial thoughts about delivery.

DELIVERIES:

***************************   STOCK UPDATE BELOW!  **************************

Logistically, we are not very well equipped to handle demand as I expect, nor is the website set-up for online shopping. We will not be able to deliver all requested orders. Nevertheless, here are the conditions, should you wish to order plants:

  • Please e-mail wattonnursery@gmail.com with specific orders. Please include your name, address, and phone number. It may take a while for us to reply, but rest assured we’ll get to you!
  • MINIMUM ORDER UPDATE: Due to overwhelming demand, we’re having to meet some deliveries via private courier. We ask that minimum order is in the region of £50. If you’ve already sent an order, we will of course honour it. We’ll do our very best to accommodate everyone. For ease, can I also ask that if you have neighbours who might like plants, please collate the order and send it to us on one e-mail? This way the order might more easily meet the minimum. Thanks for your understanding.
  • We will accept only card payments over the phone. We will leave deliveries at your doorstep or nearest safe place.
  • We cannot guarantee delivery times, although it will be between 10:00 and 16:00. We will advise you at least by the end of the week of the day we expect to deliver.
  • Please do not worry about missing out! We have grown plenty for the season. Even if we are not open until June/July, we will still have plants ready and available, including hanging baskets/planters/seasonal plants.

Early Spring

NOTICE: WATTON NURSERY OPEN AS USUAL

The nursery is ready for the year, stocked, and looking great.

Plug plants and primulas will be here until the end of March.

In addition to this we have: Alpines, shrubs, climbers, hedging (some lovely new laurel and red robin bushes), a full stock of acers…

3330-0

Acer dissectum Iniba Shidare

And there’s plenty more to come. We already have small perennials, and our larger stock (Lupins/heucheras, etc) will form a perfect complement from April onwards.

For sheer variety, this might be my favourite time of year. A few notable specimens to look out for (and hurry, they’ll be popular, I imagine), are as follows:

ae2d320259c9441921cd121a232e1f80

Nandina ‘Lemon and Lime’

Edgeworthia Chrysantha

And as I have promised a few of you, some smaller ones of these-

6100845_m

Euonymus alatus.

We also have some standard wisteria and lilac which I’m very excited about, and will probably photograph and post when they’re in flower, if they last on the nursery that long that is!

Until then, happy gardening!

New Year

Open from January 6th.

—————————————–

January and February tend to be quiet. I’ll update this post in February to let you all know what’s coming in March (We aim to have the nursery looking INCREDIBLE from the 1st March onward) but in the meantime here’s what you can expect=

PRIMULAS-1080x675

Primula Acaulis (Common names include: polyanthus/primula/prims)

The first of these are flowering in the next few weeks, and as a stop-gap bedding before the Spring season arrives, they’re perfect; hardy, colourful, low maintenance.

Bulbs can still be planted. We’ve potted up tete a tete, snowdrops, bluebells, daffs, crocus and many more. These are rooting now, although can be set at any point right up until spring.

It’s a good time for hedging! Although the majority of our laurel/red robin comes late Feb, there’s still a bit of native beech and privet. Better, it’s cheap this time of year, and conditions for planting are perfect.

In the meantime we’ll be busy growing the first plugs for the Spring season.

Best,

Max.

Christmas

Christmas trees are here!

Lots of large specimens this year, so if you have the space we’ll most likely try and tempt you…

Scottish grown, sustainable Nordman fir

As well as trees we have our freshly made wreathes, designed in-house, created with holly grown on the nursery.

Expect to see smaller gifts and decorations too, including:

Wicker tree skirts,

Tree stands,

Pot grown blue fir,

Cyclamen,

Pot grown holly,

and my favourite, the year round berries of skimmia parbella, a perfect festive garden addition:

As usual, on at least one of the weekends you can expect to see us with the bbq on (we might even have a spare hot dog if you’re lucky), and perhaps even some mulled wine.

See you soon, and Merry Christmas!

Autumn Season

Opening times: WINTER OPENING TIMES NOW IN EFFECT

Monday-Saturday: 9:30 – 16:00, Sunday: 10:00 – 16:00

From now until the end of October, we’ll have a full range of pansy and viola colours, as well as (due to high demand!) a far greater volume of dwarf wallflowers.

cheiranthus_cheiri_l_orange_bedder_dsc00904

Cheiranthus cheiri. Flowers from autumn until well into the following summer.

We’re also stocking a far greater number and variety of year round salvia. Two of my favourite are available now,

salvia_microphylla_lutea_cerise_form_2__resized

Salvia Microphylla ‘wild watermelon’

And-

red_salvia_gregii_1024x1024

Salvia Greggii, wonderfully fragrant, surprisingly hardy.

These will be in stock most of the autumn alongside the usual range of calluna heather, goldcrest conifers, cyclamen, and much more. We now have a full stock of planted hanging baskets, and new this year, theme planted wooden barrel planters for only £15.

Let’s hope the autumn sun continues!

See you on the nursery,

Max.

Off season

The busy time for planting is over. Although the stock on the nursery is significantly less in the off season, we still have some excellent plants. Such as-

pel grand ivy pink

pelargonium (geraniums)

Which are excellent to fill in any summer gaps, and are still only 60p each. Further, we have an excellent selection of drought tolerant bedding begonia, 6 varieties of heuchera, and some beautiful-

Screenshot_20190625-142720_Chrome.jpg

Dahlia (available in various colours)

So- although the main thrust of the season is over, there is still plenty of interest.

On our growing site we are preparing to grow nursery stock shrubs, bulbs, and pansies- which will be ready for the next best time on the nursery- September/ October.

Bedding plant season

It’s that time of year when all is colourful. The nursery is no exception. We are, and will be fully stocked until at least July, with the best selection in May and early June.  Notable highlights are a fabulous crop of geranium-

20190515_102717.jpg

pelargonium h. Zonals ‘violet

… which we stock in 10 different colours. Equally eye catching are our range of osteospermum, including my personal favourite,

20190505_082639.jpg

osteospermum ‘blue eyed beauty’

These are only 2 of hundreds of different lines. So if you need seasonal colour of any sort; tubs, baskets (especially our range of illumination begonia), planters, shrubs, perennials and more, do come and see us!
